MEET OUR WRITING MENTORS

 

Neni Sta. Romana Cruz

Neni discovered the love of reading and writing as a child–and has been obsessed with helping the young discover this love, too. She tried to do that in her teaching years at International School Manila where she headed the Children’s Media Center and taught a mentorship writing program for verbally gifted students. Today, she tries to do that again as chair of the National Book Development Board. Although she has 10+ published books and has been anthologized in over 20–a big leap from locked diaries of her childhood–she knows that one is only as good (or as bad) as the last book. She is happiest when she is home, free from meetings and has all the time and quiet to read and write.

Roel Cruz

Roel is a freelance editor, writer and educator who still breaks out into a big silly grin when he remembers his years as a storyteller in Museo Pambata. With his short stories published in various local publications — and two major essays for the 2011 La Salle centennial book and regular sports articles for goarchers.com — he can earnestly say that his passion for reading and writing definitely overshoots his love for ice cream, music, the beach and vegetating in front of his laptop to watch movies and favorite tv shows. Having been a Literature major in college and Creative Writing major in graduate school in De La Salle University (MFA major in Creative Writing), it is clear that whether he talks to friends or younger people about the craft, Roel always ends up floating along tangerine trees and marmalade skies when speaking of literature and writing.
